Collision Avoidance vs CLIVE Surface Tracking

Many conventional cleaning drones only provide collision avoidance as a safety protocol. The Aspira AC 4.2 is equipped with CLIVE real-time surface tracking, which not only increases safety, but also improves cleaning performance.

Example of AC 4.2 Surface Tracking

Collision Avoidance with standard cleaning drone

CLEANING SURFACESTANDARD DRONETARGET DISTANCE

Collision avoidance detects nearby objects and then takes evasive movement to avoid hitting what it has detected.

This can lead to a bouncing motion as the drone constantly reacts to perceived dangers, making piloting more challenging and cleaning less effective.

CLIVE Surface Tracking on the AC 4.2

CLEANING SURFACESET DISTANCEAC 4.2

With the Aspira AC 4.2, our radar and CLIVE algorithm constantly monitor the cleaning face and precisely adjust the drone to maintain an even gap.

Performed in real-time, the drone can react to both wind gusts and uneven or moving cleaning surfaces, such as a flexing wind turbine blade.

How much does a cleaning drone cost?

An Aspira AC 4.2 costs £30,000 + VAT, with 2 days’ training and a 12-month warranty included. Finance is available, subject to status.

You will need a pilot qualification called a GVC to fly this drone. These start from around £750.

You will also need a SORA to spray commercially, which costs around £1,800 to £3,000. We can help with both to make the process as smooth as possible.

For existing cleaning companies that already have the van, pump, water and DI, that is most of the cost.

If you are a start-up cleaning firm, we’d estimate around £50,000 to £100,000 to get up and running with all the equipment required, including van, pump, water tank, DI, filters and so on.

How quickly does a cleaning drone pay for itself?

From experience, our operators are charging £1,500 to £2,000 a day for standard jobs, and £3,000 a day upwards for larger sites and facilities. Sometimes more.

You won’t be flying every day. Weather, scheduling and the rest of your business see to that.

But if you can win one or two jobs a week, then after your business costs there are good returns to be made, and at those day rates the drone isn’t a big number for long.

Want to see how the numbers stack up for your business? Come and see it fly, bring your questions, and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cleaning Drones

What happens if a cleaning drone motor fails?

The AC 4.2 has eight motors. In the event of a motor failure, the drone can land safely with the remaining seven. Repair the motor and get flying again.

Can the AC 4.2 fly anywhere?

Where you’re allowed to fly is set by your CAA permission, and the SORA we help you with covers the kind of sites a cleaning company works on.

Where it’s able to fly is nearly everywhere that can receive a reliable GPS signal. Situations where a GPS signal may be unreliable and restrict flight would be indoors, in tightly packed urban environments or near high-energy apparatus. The AC 4 Ultimate is an upgrade that allows flight with no GPS signal and is suited for these scenarios.

For windows, cladding, roofs and solar on ordinary buildings, the 4.2 is the right drone.

How many batteries does a cleaning drone need for a day’s work?

The package comes with six, which is three pairs: one flying in the drone, one set charging, one set cooling. Managed properly that’s near enough continuous flying through a working day.

Can a cleaning drone fly in rain or wind?

The AC 4.2 is IP55 rated, so light rain isn’t a problem. Wind is the bigger factor. The AC 4.2 will fly in winds up to 20mph, but well before that the spray starts going where the wind wants rather than where you want, so in practice it’s the cleaning that sets the limit, not the drone.

CLIVE is what keeps the drone stable against the surface in gusts

Do I need a pilot to operate a cleaning drone?

You can pilot the cleaning drone yourself once you have completed your GVC certification. This is a 4-5 days course with practical evaluation that will set you up perfectly for commerical operations. Alternatively, some service providers will hire in a pilot for cleaning jobs - depending on scale and location.

How long does it take to get a cleaning drone operational?

Expect around three months from deposit to your first paid job, and most of that is the CAA, not us.

The drone itself is a build queue of around six weeks, which you join once we’ve received a 20% deposit. Your GVC takes four to five days with an external training provider, so dates depend on their availability.

The SORA is the long one and the timing is down to the CAA. Our drones are recognised by the CAA and have been through SORAs before, which helps, and we support you through the process. Delays usually come from parts of the application needing resubmitting, which is where our help earns its keep.

The practical advice: start the SORA the day you pay the deposit, so it’s working its way through the CAA while the drone is being built.
